Most range tools draw a band the moment price flattens and erase it when price moves, which says little about whether a range ever existed. Edo Range State starts from a stricter question: has the market earned the word range? The reasoning behind it is in how to tell a range from a pause with three tests.

Three tests, all at once

On each closed bar the indicator looks at a window of bars, 20 by default. The window must be compact, with a height of at most 5 times the 50-bar ATR. It must have low efficiency, meaning price covered little net distance compared with the road it travelled. And it must show rotation, with at least two separate visits to the top zone and two to the bottom zone. Miss one test and there is no range.

A box that stays where it is

When the three tests are met the box is drawn from the first bar of the window, with a midline and right-edge labels that give the top, the midline and the bottom with their distance to the close in ATR. The box only appears on the confirmation bar and its top and bottom never move afterwards. That detail matters: the indicator recognises the range after it has proved itself, not from its first bar. The edges can be measured on wicks or on bodies.

Counting while the range lasts

While the range is active the panel follows its age, where price sits inside it and how many times each edge has been tested, and a dot marks every new test on the chart. A range counts as mature once it has lasted two windows. Before confirmation, a dashed provisional box warns that a range may be forming, and it disappears if the range is never confirmed.

In progress, confirmed or failed

A breakout starts when a bar closes beyond the edge by a small buffer, 0.10 ATR by default. It is confirmed after three consecutive closes outside, or at once by a single close one ATR or more beyond the edge. If price closes back inside first, the breakout is marked as failed with an orange cross and the same range goes on. A confirmed breakout ends the range, and its box turns green or red by the side it broke through.

Panel, labels and alerts

A Full or Compact panel reports the state, the range, its age, the position of price, the tests and the last event, in the corner you choose. Alerts cover a confirmed range, each edge test, a close above or below the range, failed breakouts and range ends, and all of them fire at the bar close. The indicator describes what price did. It does not say where price will go next.
